Straight/Diamond/Helical Knurls
Here at Driv-Lok, we offer three main styles of knurled pins, all with wide-ranging sizes, diameters, lengths, and end configurations. If you are unsure which style is right for your application or which fastener is best suited for your needs, don’t hesitate to contact Driv-Lok. Our engineers will take the time to understand your needs and offer the best solution for you.
Straight Knurl Pins
Straight-knurled pins have a straight grooved pattern on their surface of parallel lines. This style typically has lower insertion forces than the helical style and offers resistance to turning when used in assemblies. It is most often used in applications where the pin will be subjected to rotational forces to transmit torque across it, as well as applications that require resistance to the rotational movement of the mating component. It’s also an excellent fastening choice for precise alignment, like measurement tools or optical devices.

Applications

Diamond Knurl Pins
Another common type of knurled pin is the diamond style, which features small, diamond-shaped ridges on the surface of the pin, usually through crossed-diagonal lines. These types of knurled pins are much more wear-resistant and durable than the other two types, as well as aesthetically pleasing to look at, making them excellent for assemblies that require a decorative touch. Diamond knurled pins are perfect for applications in which the pin will experience consistent contact or high friction during everyday use.

Applications

Helical Knurl Pins
Helical knurling is a more unique pattern than straight or diamond, as it causes a whorl or spiral pattern on the surface rather than a pattern of straight lines. Like diamond knurling, helical knurled pins are good for decorative and functional applications where more powerful fastening is required. The helical knurl causes the pin to rotate as it enters the hole, creating more overall surface contact. This results in higher frictional forces, greater engagement, and improved resistance to back out. They are also excellent for assemblies containing cylindrical parts, like shafts, that will rotate during operation.
