Knurled Pins & Studs

Why choose Knurled Pins?

Knurled Pins, at their simplest, are grooved pins with serrations around the diameter–with many more serrations than traditional grooved pins. These pins are press-fit fasteners, and when compressed into a hole, extrude radial forces to hold the fastener in place.

An overview of knurled pins

Knurled pins, as mentioned above, are similar to grooved pins but with many more serrations around the diameter of the pin. Knurled pins are typically roll-formed rather than swaged and come in three different style configurations–a straight knurl, a helical knurl, or a diamond knurl configuration. Radial forces are more evenly distributed around the diameter of a hole for knurled pins than for grooved pins because a knurled pin has more contact points with a hole than a grooved pin. The teeth may broach the mating hole when the material is softer and more ductile than the pin material.

Knurled pins are available with nominal diameters from 3/32″ through 3/8″ and lengths from 3/16″ through 3″. They are special orders with various dimensions and end configurations available to our customers.

The applications of knurled pins

Knurled pins are the best fasteners for die-casting and plastic applications. They also provide superior fastening in component assembly, where the parts have thin cross-sections and sheet metal hinges.

The amount of expansion during insertion is predicted on the knurl pitch, and as a result, coarse knurls provide more significant expansion than fine knurls–something to keep in mind when deciding on your order. A knurled pin should have a minimum of 15 teeth to allow proper feed and rolling capability, and the number of teeth must be a whole number to allow for proper tracking and avoid slivering. The capability of expanded diameter tolerance is +/-.002.
