Situation

A current DRIV-LOK tool manufacturing customer was developing a new line of wrenches. They came to DRIV-LOK to find a way to actuate the jaws of the wrench and specify a solution that would withstand shear forces and be wear-resistant—two features not provided by a coil pin.

Solution

Using DRIV-LOK’s EngiNomics® approach, we identified the best solution as a Driv-Lok Groove Pin. This would secure the pin into the jaw and allow it to be used as a pivot for actuating the wrench’s jaws. The ends were chamfered for ease of insertion, thus reducing assembly time, and hardened steel was chosen to accommodate shear forces and wear resistance.

Situation

A leader in the Archery Industry developed the first true Switchblade Mechanical Broadhead (arrow) in the bow hunting field. Their design was in need of a fastener that would hold the razor sharp blades in place and allow them to rotate between the open and closed positions.

Solution

Through our Applications Engineering team, Driv-Lok, Inc. identified a means to accomplish the rotating and locking requirements through use of an engineered groove pin design. The grooves provide an interference fit when inserted into the application, holding the pin securely in place. The ungrooved portion of the pin allows the blades to rotate freely between open and closed positions.

Situation

A major manufacturer of infant car seats required a more reliable method of holding the armrest onto the seat. Their former method was to use a standard screw to fasten the armrest in place. The movement of the armrest up and down would loosen the screw. They needed a method that would hold the armrest firmly in place, while still allowing it to rotate as designed.

Solution

Through our ENGINOMICS ®, Driv-Lok Inc. identified a solution to the problem by using an engineered Ferrol Stud. Ferrols around the circumference of the pin are designed so the plastic flows over them when the pin is inserted. The ferrols then lock into the plastic, making removal of the pin virtually impossible. This allows the arm to rotate freely while maintaining the required tight fit.

Situation

A leading automotive assembly manufacturer required a dual-purpose fastener to replace the more expensive alignment part they had been using. The fastener needed to center and align multiple pieces, while allowing fluid to pass through the fastening joint.

Solution

Driv-Lok Inc.’s ENGINOMICS ® Team resolved this issue for the customer by developing the Closed Seam Hollow Dowel. This part replaced expensive seamless hollow dowels and other alignment-type products that the customer had been using.

By utilizing Closed Seam Hollow Dowels, the customer was able to align multiple pieces with easy insertion, improve throughput, and maintain a leak-free joint. They also saved money, as production of Closed Seam Hollow Dowels involves minimal scrap and is more efficient than conventional methods of machining seamless hollow dowels.

Situation

A leading Tier 1 automotive supplier in the actuator industry required a method of securing a small plastic shroud to the actuator housing. This was used to protect the device, ensure connectivity in all weather conditions, and prevent rotation of the actuator.

Solution

The ENGINOMICS team at Driv-Lok Inc. developed a miniature type “U” grooved fastener that would be pressed into the aluminum housing through the plastic shroud in three positions. The pins ensured that neither the shroud nor actuator would move, preventing connection issues.

Situation

A customer with an innovative hand tool design required a method of retaining the tool plunger in a locked position.

Solution

Through our ENGINOMICS ® team, Driv-Lok Inc. identified a means to accomplish locking the plunger in place. The solution was an engineered groove pin design. The pin is held in place by the groove, which provides an interference fit when pressed into the application. The spring-loaded plunger is then held securely in place by the body of the pin when the plunger is retracted.

Situation

A customer was looking for a way to fasten an aluminum extrusion to an aluminum end plate for use in a lighting application.

Solution

Driv-Lok’s ENGINOMICS® team designed and produced a fastener that combined two of our technologies: a Knurl on one end and a Barb-Lok on the other. This allowed the customer to easily install the plate onto the extrusion, securely holding it in place while using only one type of fastener. The new fastener also eliminated the need for expensive driving equipment, saving the customer money.

Situation

This customer was supplying coils of plastic tubing, which were wound around a steel structure. The steel structure was 8-10 feet in diameter and assembled using nuts and bolts. The assembly worked but it was very difficult to disassemble and return to the tubing supplier. The reels were either not disassembled, leading to higher freight costs, or were not returned at all.

Solution

Driv-Lok’s ENGINOMICS team supplied Type E groove pins, which were substituted for the nuts and bolts that previously held the structure together. Using the Driv-Lok groove pins, the steel structure could be easily disassembled and returned to the tubing supplier, leading to lower freight costs and more reels being returned.

Situation

A leading automotive manufacturer requested engineering assistance from Driv-Lok to solve an assembly problem on one of their transmission lines. The problem was defined as an occasional mis-feed of threaded fasteners during the assembly of a wear plate to the housing. This mis-feed caused fasteners to fall into the gears which in turn halted the entire assembly. The threaded fastener’s only function was to hold the wear plate to the housing so it could be inverted for assembly completion.

Solution

This application was already using Driv-Lok split hollow dowel pins as a partial holding system. Driv-Lok’s ENGINOMICS® team reviewed the situation and added a locking feature to the center of the split hollow dowel, which held the wear plate in place. This feature was then patented under patent #US 7,241,095 B2. This upgrade eliminated the use of the threaded fastener, provided the customer with cost savings, solved the problem, and prevented future defects.

Situation

A heavy equipment manufacturer using a threaded fastener was experiencing loosening of the joint due to vibration in a hinged joint application in addition, their current assembly method was extremely slow and inefficient.

Solution

The Driv-Lok Inc. ENGINOMICS® team introduced a Type “E” Groove Pin to the design. This pin eliminated the loosening that the threaded fastener experienced. The team also designed an insertion press to install the pin, which holds multiple pieces in place, hands free, while the pin is inserted into the application. The design allows the pin to be installed to the same depth every time. The end result was a complete system to solve both the fastening and installation problems.
